internet_SYDxU_781615 years ago, 30 April 1993, the World Wide Web (WWW) was released for general use. During that time, very little attention was paid to the Internet, but then things are not same any more, and now Internet is an integral part of the lives of some 1.3 billion people worldwide.

From a global perspective, with the internet user base of 25.2 million, India stands at the 8th position, compared to 161.6 million and 96 million for the US and China respectively.

According to the quarterly report as per December 2007 submitted by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Internet subscriber base has reached up to 10.36 million in India. Broadband subscriber base has reached up to 3.13 million users and there are 57.83 million wireless Internet subscribers capable of accessing Internet through mobile handset such as GSM or CDMA in India.

The need for internet is no longer restricted to the vast information platter, rather it is far beyond that. Today the Web works as a platform to communicate with peers and business partners by way of various social network sites.

The possibilities that the Web offers are indeed limitless. Whilst some complain that their business via new medium is threatened, and many others still actively find creative business models for future times online.

In an interview with NDTV Profit, Kavitark Ram Shriram, founding board member of Google, said, “Indian Internet space is growing, but this growth is slower than some of the other countries in Asia, so there is a need to encourage the total usage of Internet in India.

There is something wrong with the figures. If you sum up all
10.36
3.13
57.83 million
they come to 70.32 million while the news item says that the figures stand at 25.2 million.

Though India may lag behind China, its powerful and emerging neighbour, internet is catching up fast. No need to worry on this account
